Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

It's a Habit

We all have them.

Some of them are good.

Some are not so good.

I have a few. Some are good...some are not so good.

1. I'm a picker. I think this is my worst habit of all time. I pick at everything. My number one victim of choice? My cuticles. I pick and pick until it hurts. It's a terrible habit friends. Shaun is convinced that my leathery thumb will eventually need to be amputated due to this terrible habit. I often keep my nails painted in an effort to stop the picking so that I don't ruin my manicure. Apparently the threat of pending amputation isn't enough, but fear of chipping my nail polish gets the job done.

2. I am a creature of habit. Yes, this in itself is a habit and one that I don't particularly like. I don't like change. I often do or eat the same things over and over since I find it comforting. This includes food. I will often order similar fare at a restaurant if I know that I love it. On Saturday, I spent the day shopping with my mom. Our favorite stop for lunch is the Nordstrom Cafe. They have the most delicious salads and soup. I always order the blue cheese and pear salad...a delicious dish topped with candied walnuts and champage vinaigrette.

And on the side? A cup of tomato soup. It's divine. Heavenly. And I order the same thing every time I go.

3. I'm on 2 cups a day. Since I started working, I've started almost each morning with a giant cup of coffee. It's not even the caffeine that I need so desperately, but the act of drinking a piping hot, creamy, and {of course} sweet cup of coffee that I love. Plus, it gives me something to do. That morning habit has creeped into a 2 cup habit since I had a cup after lunch a few times at work. Oh how easily habits are formed. Oh and I'm not talking about the baby cup size (as pictured below) either.

4. Glasses everywhere. Did you ever see that movie Signs? Where the little girl leaves glasses of water all over the house? Well that's me. Only I'm not protecting us from oncoming aliens. Instead, I just have a terrible habit of leaving half-drank glasses of water all over the house. I'm pretty sure that if Shaun ever kicks me to the curb, it will be over this dirty little habit. I'm trying to change, I swear.

Habits are a funny thing. If you think about it, so much of what we do everyday are habitual! I'd like to think that I have some good habits too...though I'm drawing a blank on those at the moment :) Does eating breakfast every morning count?

So there you have it. Some of my darkest secrets and habits. Most of them aren't pretty. So now it's your turn...what are some of your habits? Share the good and the bad!

My New Favorite Thing This Side of the Hudson

So I told you that Shaun and I had a fun night at the movies on Saturday.

But it wasn't just any movie-viewing experience.

After my parents raved about the new dine-in movie theater near them, Shaun suggested we give it a try and see Limitless. I shouted a resounding yes! (And not only for a chance to see Bradley Cooper up close, either).

click image for source...that is not Shaun and me :)

So as you may imagine, this is no ordinary theater. The theater was filled with large, plush leather recliners equipped with tray tables for eating and drinking. As soon as we sat down, all I wanted was to put my feet up...luckily my seat reclined!

We had arrived about 15 minutes before the show to pick up our tickets, get settled in and order our food. Our waitress brought over a little cup of cookies & cream popcorn...don't mind if I do! And you know I'm not opposed to dessert before dinner :) Shaun and I also ordered a bucket of beer to enjoy throughout the show. Now this is the kind of thing I could get used to!

For dinner, Shaun enjoyed a chicken quesadilla while I ordered the chicken fingers with fries (a throwback to my favorite meal as a teenager).

It was a great way to enjoy the movie! As Shaun and I kept repeating, Wow this isn't terrible, we were reluctant to have to leave at the end of the show. Oh and the movie was decent too :)

So that's how Shaun and I spent Saturday night. A little dinner and a movie, all rolled into one! Now I think it will be tough to go back to a regular ol' theater after this one. After all, the best part is that you have space and are nowhere near the other movie goers. Now that is something I could get used to.

So what do you think? Have these theaters sprang up near you? What's your favorite local spot?

Getting My Walk On

I went to sleep at 9:30 last night.

It was wonderful. Sometimes an early night is just the ticket to starting the week off right!

On Saturday, I spent the day shopping with my mom, followed by the movies with Shaun (a post I can't wait to share with you!) and then participating in a walk for MS along with some of our friends.

We did the walk in Belmar, NJ (down the shore for you non-New Jerseyans) and walked in honor of our friend's mother who suffered from MS and is no longer with us. It was a great day for a great cause! We showed up to register and found out that the walk was not in fact a 5K as originally thought...it was 6.5 miles! More than a 10K!

We were...surprised...but ready to tackle the challenge! Unfortunately the weather was not as cooperative as we'd hoped. It was overcast and chilly all day.

Good thing we walked to keep warm! We all donned team shirts, designed in Yankees theme.

After our 6 miles, we made our way back to the home base. Though I thought it would be super easy to power through this...it was a walk after all!...it was actually more challenging than I thought it would be! My quads were burning like crazy. Oh and I was in pajamas by 5:30pm and asleep by 9:30 last night. Just sayin'.

And of course after the race, we got our eat {and drink} on! The home base (which just so happened to be one of our favorite shore bars) was serving up a barbecue for all the participants. I got down with a big dish o' food. It was good.

The moral of the story? I have a new appreciation for walking :)

So how did you spend your weekend? Have you ever felt like a long walk gave you just the work out you needed?
