Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

Getting My Walk On

I went to sleep at 9:30 last night.

It was wonderful. Sometimes an early night is just the ticket to starting the week off right!

On Saturday, I spent the day shopping with my mom, followed by the movies with Shaun (a post I can't wait to share with you!) and then participating in a walk for MS along with some of our friends.

We did the walk in Belmar, NJ (down the shore for you non-New Jerseyans) and walked in honor of our friend's mother who suffered from MS and is no longer with us. It was a great day for a great cause! We showed up to register and found out that the walk was not in fact a 5K as originally thought...it was 6.5 miles! More than a 10K!

We were...surprised...but ready to tackle the challenge! Unfortunately the weather was not as cooperative as we'd hoped. It was overcast and chilly all day.

Good thing we walked to keep warm! We all donned team shirts, designed in Yankees theme.

After our 6 miles, we made our way back to the home base. Though I thought it would be super easy to power through this...it was a walk after all!...it was actually more challenging than I thought it would be! My quads were burning like crazy. Oh and I was in pajamas by 5:30pm and asleep by 9:30 last night. Just sayin'.

And of course after the race, we got our eat {and drink} on! The home base (which just so happened to be one of our favorite shore bars) was serving up a barbecue for all the participants. I got down with a big dish o' food. It was good.

The moral of the story? I have a new appreciation for walking :)

So how did you spend your weekend? Have you ever felt like a long walk gave you just the work out you needed?

Walking can sometimes be hard work!!! My latest workout is pushing my 2 yr old in his stroller & having my rather-on-the-large sized newborn in her baby carrier while we walk. It's ridiculous!

I love doing walks like that! There's nothing like getting together with people you care about and walking for a good cause (and eating really yummy food at the end!). Glad you had a rewarding weekend :)

That is a really long walk when you aren't expecting it! That meal looks like the perfect follow-up:-)

oh boy! that would be quite a surprise! glad you had fun :)

I love love long walks. Binks and I take long walks at least 2x a week and it really helps clear my head. I love it. :)

I'm always surprised at how good of a workout (and different) walking is! It's supposed to be one of the best workouts for strengthening the back too - and after a "crafty" weekend, I discovered that I definitely need to strengthen my back! Glad you had a good weekend!

I always underestimate a good walk. I don't feel like I'm getting anything out of it but I know it's super beneficial. I have been trying to take my pup on longer walks!

As for this weekend? My husband had to work so I spent the day in front of the TV and I watched Julie and Julia for the millionth time. The DVD had so many bonus features and recipes that I spent hours just on that!

I love long walks! I try to make time for them every weekend. So nice to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Even when it's gray and dreary :)

I had a great weekend too! Our hike through the park wasn't as purposeful as your walk but it definitely made my weekend a little more healthy! I definitely think a nice long walk can make the perfect work out!
