Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

Welcome to my world!

DIY Door Hanger

Hi friends!

I'm sorry I've been MIA for the last few weeks. Things have been a little crazy around here since little Miss Penelope joined the ranks. Somehow, my little Sweet P is 3 weeks old.

In the weeks before Penelope was born, I had a bit of extra time on my hands. And so for the first time in a really, really long time, I had time to get a little crafty. I even Mod Podged and hot glue gunned things! I even made Shaun drive me to AC Moore for crafting supplies the week before I gave birth.

One of my favorite crafts that I did are these cute little door hangers that I made for Penelope's nursery.

We have a giant closet in her room and so I wanted to add something to make the incredibly tall, stark white doors feel a little more integrated into the room.

These were so easy and so inexpensive and add such a fun, personal touch to her room. Not to mention that I adore all things monogrammed, so I couldn't wait to have Pen's initials adorning her nursery.

I started by purchasing a white P and H from AC Moore. I had actually bought the H years ago with plans to paint and hang it, however, I never got around to crafting anything. All I needed was a P to make my monogrammed set. They aren't even the same 'font', but I kind of like it that way since it adds a little playfulness.

I then used some leftover scraps of scrapbook paper that I had from Pen's baby book that I made. I simply traced each letter backwards on the back of the paper, carefully cut it out and used a bit of Elmer's glue to adhere it to the wood letter.

After smoothing it out and letting it dry, I attached a couple pieces of yarn with a hot glue gun. I simply measured how I wanted them to hang off the door, cut to size and got my glue gun on.

After letting the whole thing dry, I simply hanged the letters on the handles of her closet doors. So cute, no?

Such a simple upgrade and I love seeing her little initials everytime I walk into her room.

Though I already had some supplies on hand (the paper, yarn and glue gun), I think you could probably do this entire project for under $10. I actually want to make these for Shaun and my bedroom closet as well, but with some more grown-up paper, just to add a little more color and interest to the room.

So there you have it. A super simple craft that makes a huge difference in Pen's nursery.

So what do you think?

What have you been crafting lately?

Are you monogram-obsessed, like me?

Long Weekend

This past weekend was a wonderfully long and awesome 3 days!

Of course, for Penelope and me these days, everyday feels like a weekend. The fun part about this one, though, was that Shaun also had Monday off and so we used the time to its fullest.

We had lots of visitors this weekend, but also had some time to enjoy our new little family of 3. Shaun and I just keep remarking in wonderment how we can't believe how amazing our little Sweet P is. Our lives have certainly changed a ton over the last 2+ weeks! Our weekend consisted of some relaxing and some sleep catch up, in addition to spending some quality time together.

We enjoyed gorgeous Valentine's Day flowers from Shaun to me:

and from my parents to Penelope:

We enjoyed a lovely walk in the park...

which sadly only lasted a few minutes before it got too windy for little P.

But it was glorious to get outside for a bit regardless.

On the way home, we drove by the waterfront in Jersey City for a little hot chocolate for Mom and coffee for Dad. We used to live in this neighborhood and while I love having so much more space in our current home, I really, really miss this view of lower Manhattan everyday.

We continued our weekend by trying to catch up on some shows! It's amazing how fast time flies with a newborn..our evenings go by in a flash and before we know it, it's time for bed. Our TV shows have definitely fallen by the wayside, but we were very excited to catch up on The Walking Dead since it returned last week! We still have Sunday night's episode to watch, and I think that is on the menu for this evening (pending no meltdowns from the new addition...or from me).

I hope you all had a great weekend and got to soak up an extra day off! I love starting the week on Tuesday!

One Week In

So it's been over a week since Penelope Jane was born.

One week in and it has certainly been a bit of a transition as life has changed complete focus to being a Mommy 24/7. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't an adjustment! But an awesome one at that. Penelope is obviously on her own schedule which has meant waking every 2-3 hours, even overnight. This mama is already quite exhausted! But then I see that amazingly sweet face and my heart melts.

One week in and I'm trying to start establishing a routine with little miss Pen. Though she is on her own schedule, I'm trying to make sure that I get up at a normal time in the morning, shower, get dressed and get some things done around the house. It's tough because the day manages to just fly right on by.

One week in and I'm back to eating some of my old food favorites!

I actually made scrambled eggs and toast last week. After not eating or making them for Shaun for over 9 months (you see, I have magic scrambled egg-making powers), I woke up last week and just wanted them for breakfast. I was so happy to learn that I hadn't lost my scrambled egg-making touch.

It's amazing how tastes come right back! I also had a banana and peanut butter smoothie. After not wanting anything to do with bananas or peanut butter for almost a year, here I was ordering a giant, refreshing banana pb smoothie from a little cafe next to Pen's pediatrician's office. And you know what? I haven't stopped thinking about it.

One week in and I'm drinking water like it's my job. Like multiple water bottles per day. No matter how much I drink, I just can't get enough! I ordered a snazzy new water bottle to be my BFF over the next weeks (or months)!

One week in and I went to sleep at 7pm last night. No seriously. Penelope was sleeping soundly and I felt like a serious #zombiemom. So I changed into flannel jammies, crawled into bed and passed out while watching the Grammy's. It never felt so good.

One week in and I'm loving my new life and my little family!

I'm hoping to get back to a more normal blogging schedule this week. I can't promise a 5 day a week schedule, but hopefully I will slowly get back into posting regularly!

Have a wonderful Monday, friends!
