Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

Welcome to my world!

Free Food & Film: I Want This All The Time

On Wednesday I attended the Third Annual NYC Food Film Festival at the new Water Taxi Beach at the South Street Seaport, a location I had yet to visit.

FREE food and film!

Due to the Seattle-like weather conditions (I know it's been said over and over and over...but really? Do we live in Seattle?), it was a bit chilly and not quite as crowded as I had thought it would be, but it definitely had potential. After all, not much can beat free food at a free event on the water in New York City.

...waiting for films to start

Especially when the theme of the free food was 'deep fried'...yum! Food was also available for purchase...but isn't chasing down the tray-of-free-grub-carrying-girl part of the fun? While I wasn't able to stay the whole night, I was able to score some fried cheese curds (not sure what this means...curds sounds icky, but it was like deep fried mozzerella...and it was delicious, curd and all)...

Deep fried cheese curd...not sure what that means, but it was tasty!

Nice man preparing free food for all!

...and I pushed my way through the crowd to score 2 corn dogs, a food that when thinking about, I feel embarrassed that I think they are delicious...but they just are, I don't care how silly I look whilst eating one.
I was happy once I scored my corn dog

There was a free celery-based alcoholic drink...but since I despise eating the vegetable with a passion, I just couldn't stomach drinking it and went for a $6 Peroni Italian beer instead. While I didn't get to stay as long as I'd hoped, here's hoping the Fourth Annual Food Film Festival brings sunny weather and more fabulous food and film.

Big Appetites Only at the Big Apple BBQ Block Party

On Sunday, I attended the much-hyped (by me) Big Apple BBQ Block Party where I battled crowds and ate pulled pork until my insides cried out in despair. It was a huge turnout with lines as far as the eye could see. I was lucky enough to score a free Fast Pass from a pass-carrying man who had eaten his way through the entire festival and generously gave me his as he was exiting. What did this magical pass, retailed at $100, do for me? It provided Disney World-style line cutting, exponentially improving my experience as I sailed past the long lines and into the 'Fast Pass Area'. While he had used up all of the 'money' the pass had to offer, just accessing the VIP area in itself was a treat.

Seeing pitmasters from across the nation come together for this event was fantastic. I skipped most of the New York-based offerings and went for The Pit from North Carolina (and also featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay) and Ubon's "The Champion's Choice" from Mississippi (oh, the wonderful bbq sauce...). 2 pulled pork sandwiches later, I was full and happy. Hubby went with the brisket and cucumber salad from NYC's The Hill and after a little taste testing, we decided that this is a restaurant we must try at some point. Unfortunately I didn't have the will power to keep eating...but that's what next year is for, right?

I report live from Big Apple BBQ!

I heart barbeque! Especially pulled pork!

The fest entrance at Madison Square Park

A man from Rack of Ribs giving out free (and fantastic) rib samples!

Multiple bands played throughout the day...bluegrass, folk, & country style!

Ubon's "The Champion's Choice" pulled pork & coleslaw...my pick for best bbq sauce!

The Hill's BBQ'd brisket & cucumber salad...yum!

The Pit truck, featuring Ed Mitchell, Throwdown with Bobby Flay champ!

Tips for next year:
1) If I plan to make a weekend of it, getting the Fast Pass seems worth it. The lines were way longer outside of the VIP area, and the pass came with some punchable pig icons denoting spending money...that's where your $100 goes...to endless amounts of pork.
2) Do a full sweep before launching in to the first sandwich you come across. While I'm sure every stand had delicious food, I went to the first stand with a reasonable line. The sandwich was great, but by the time I got to number 2, I was filled to the back of my throat.
3) This is for the BBQ Festival organizers: GET BETTER DESSERTS! The only desserts offered in the 12 block radius was at the Blue Smoke Desserts stand. If you remember this article, you'll recall that I raved about the apple crisp being one of the best I've ever had (and I've had a LOT of apple crisp). Unfortunately, the 'dessert' stand only offered watermelon, cookies, and a brownie with ice cream that looked average at best. If you want me to spend $4 on dessert after I've eaten my way through 2 pulled pork sandwiches, a strawberry iced tea, one delicious rib, a free sample bite of grilled pork, a few stolen bites of brisket from hubby's plate, and 2 side dishes of coleslaw, you're just going to have to do better than that.

Coming up:
Tonight I'm hitting up the Third Annual Food Film Fest at the South Street Seaport. Featured food films include: Come Have an Omelette With Me, Clam Pie, The Sacred Food, Celeriac, Eat Your Fill, & 24 Hours, 24 Million Meals: Feeding New York City. Free food offerings: Clam pie & Deep fried on a stick. Check back later this week for full report, pending my heart still works after deep fried food fest...

What I'm Pop Culturing This Week

In between tasting foods all over the city (and subsequently hitting up the gym to work off the poundage), I have a burning need to get my pop culture fix. Since the television season has wound down, I have more free time for things like writing, reading, and dvd-watching. Here's my current week in pop culture.

What I'm Watching...on DVD:
True Blood, Season 1...While I have read all (and I mean all) of the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vamp series, I currently do not get HBO and therefore am a bit behind on watching the series-based show. I anticipated the DVD for what seemed like ages and as I await disc 4 from Netflix, True Blood has not disappointed (though the casting for Eric certainly has). Today, I'll be running home to my mailbox hoping Bill, Jason, and Lafayette (the latter of whom I just can't get enough of) will be waiting for me. Meanwhile I'll fight to get that disturbingly, awesomely kickin' theme song and opening out of my head...

What I'm Watching...on TV:
Top Chef Masters...Aside from my irrational Food Network obsession, June has brought little in the way of good TV. That's why I'm psyched for Top Chef Masters on Bravo. While a much different format than the original Top Chef, as a budding foodie I'm impressed by the ridiculousness of the master chefs featured. Even the judges can't say anything bad because...well, because all of the chefs make incredible food. A great way to see rockin', well known chefs compete for donations to the charity of their choice and learn about their fancy restaurants. The only downside? Not getting to taste Hubert Keller's dorm room mac 'n cheese.

What I'm Reading:

The Pillars of the Earth...A book by Ken Follett that, on paper, I'd generally have no interest in whatsoever - Medieval times, monks, battle armor, political hierarchies. While historical fiction has never been my cup of tea and I only started reading Pillars because many fellow officemates were raving (and it was a mere $6.39 on Kindle), it has done nothing but keep me totally into the story the whole way with phenomenally written characters and intense, arson-filled plotlines. It's a lengthy read but when a book is this good, I only want more so bring on the pages!

That's about all I can squeeze into this week. Any pop culture recommendations are welcome!
