Homemade Chai (Dukan-friendly)

Today I'm leaving on a jet plane to Las Vegas for the week. I always feel bittersweet about it, since I love Vegas and traveling is fun, yet I hate leaving my family for such a long time. I'm excited for a few nice dinners and a big hotel bed all to myself, and perhaps to even catch a few extra winks on the plane today. I downloaded 'Tell the Wolves I'm Home' as part of a new mini-book club that I'm doing with my sisters and Mom. It's informal, but I'm excited to get back into reading and with an end goal in mind...to discuss over dinner with some of my favorite ladies!
In other news, today is Secret Recipe Club day! Woot!
I received Manu's Menu as my blog for the month. Manuela has some really amazing recipes on her blog that I would love to try someday (like her tiramisu...o.m.g.). One is more beautiful and decadent than the next!
I tried to find a recipe that I could adapt to be Dukan-friendly and so when I stumbled on her recipe for chai masala and chai, I couldn't wait to try it...especially since I've always wanted to try making it myself!

This recipe is fragrant, so pretty and oh so easy. I actually had most of the ingredients on hand, except for the ground cardamom. Though it was $15 in our local grocery store, we live down the street from Jersey City's Little India and were able to find a large bag of it for just $4.99. Score!
Chai Masala & Chai
*Adapted from Manu's Menu
Chai Masala:
2 tsp ground pepper
2 tsp ground ginger
1 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Chai:
1 1/2 C water
1 1/2 C fat free milk
4-5 tsp sweetener (such as Splenda baking blend)
1/2 tsp chai masala mixture
2 tsp tea leaves
In a small bowl, mix the chai masala ingredients together. Secure in a spice jar, zip top bag or small plastic storage container.
In a saucepan, mix the water, milk, chai masala and sugar and bring to a boil.
Add tea leaves, stir, and let simmer for 2-3 minutes. Turn off heat and let steep for 3 minutes.
Strain carefully (it's hot!) and enjoy.
I enjoyed my chai as a late night treat and so my photos are less than perfect. However, I'm so happy to find a low-cal chai recipe to enjoy! I know that my chai masal mix is going to last through quite a few mugs of this delicious drink.
I hope you have a great Monday, and a great week! I'll try to pop in when i can with some updates!
