{I had a visitor at work this week!}
Happy Almost Friday! It feels like Friday, since tomorrow is the holiday, doesn't it? I have a half day at work today and will be spending Friday and Saturday at home in Jersey City. I really hope that the storm holds out because our plans for the 4th include a sprayground here in JC, followed by the Freedom & Fireworks Festival! It's rare that we have no plans for Independence Day, and so I'm excited to spend it in Jersey City this year.
We are also prepping for our annual trip to Aruba and the plane leaves on Sunday. I have a lot to do, but am so glad that I have two days to do laundry, pick up some last minute toiletries and surprise airplane toys for Penelope and pack. I'm admittedly a tad bit nervous for an almost 5 hour flight with a 17 month old, but we'll do the best we can and copious amounts of snacks will be our BFF I'm sure.
Shaun was home with Penelope all week and I think he is ready for a break. He brought her into my office yesterday to meet everyone and hang out for a little while. It was great.
This week I finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home. Loved this book! I hope that you will join the discussion the week of July 14th! We have our little book club in Aruba next week, and I can't wait to discuss. Meanwhile, I started reading Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore. I'm about a third of the way through it and really enjoying it! If nothing else, it certainly makes me long for a summer home. Thanks to Christine and Jackie O. for the tip on this author! I'm really just thrilled that I'm back to reading again. I was in such a rut for a long time, so this is very exciting for me. I will probably download a couple of other books in case I get some reading time in on the beach next week. Ugh I really just can't wait.
In case you are interested, here is the synopsis:
On scholarship at a prestigious East Coast college, ordinary Mabel Dagmar is surprised to befriend her roommate, the beautiful, wild, blue-blooded Genevra Winslow. Ev invites Mabel to spend the summer at Bittersweet, her cottage on the Vermont estate where her family has been holding court for more than a century; it’s the kind of place where children twirl sparklers across the lawn during cocktail hour. Mabel falls in love with midnight skinny-dipping, the wet dog smell that lingers near the yachts, and the moneyed laughter that carries across the still lake while fireworks burst overhead. Before she knows it, she has everything she’s ever wanted: friendship, a boyfriend, access to wealth, and, most of all, for the first time in her life, the sense that she belongs.
But as Mabel becomes an insider, a terrible discovery leads to shocking violence and reveals what the Winslows may have done to keep their power intact - and what they might do to anyone who threatens them. Mabel must choose: either expose the ugliness surrounding her and face expulsion from paradise, or keep the family’s dark secrets and make Ev's world her own.
In other news, we have a winner for the Dukan Diet giveaway! I chose the winner at random via comment entries, using random.org's number generator:
The winner is Ann K! Ann, please send me an email (theavidappetite@gmail.com) with your home address so that I may get your prize off to you as soon as possible!
That's about it from here! I'll try to do a few posts next week, but mostly, I plan to unplug completely. It's so needed after the last few months of non-stop go, go, go. I hope you have a GREAT 4th of July...stay safe everyone!
What are your plans for 4th of July?
