Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

Five Things Friday

Thank you so much for your kind words on yesterday's big announcement :)

It feels so good to tell you all and have it just be openly out there in the world. It definitely makes the whole thing feel a lot more real and, if it's possible, even more exciting! I've missed blogging and all of my blog friends, so I'm happy to be back without anything to hide :)

So since we're on the baby subject, I thought for this week's Five Things Friday, a little baby edition would be fun. And no, my hope is not that TAA turns into a full-blown baby blog, but at the same time...well, that's what's going on in my life so I hope you don't mind if I do take some posts to share that with you! I've loved reading about other bloggers' journeys to parenthood, so I hope you will as well. So here's five things about this crazy ride I'm on right now!

Baby H is due on January 30. A winter baby! I'm thrilled that by the time I'm carrying around a watermelon under my shirt, it will not in fact be 100 degrees plus humidity outside. We don't really have many winter babies in our family, so it's exciting that H will have a day to him/herself. Now we just have to wonder if I go late, will he/she be born on Superbowl Sunday? Only time will tell :)

I'm in my 16th week. So on Monday of next week, I'll officially be 4 months pregnant! On one hand, time is flying and on the other, I do feel like I've been pregnant for quite some time before even telling people! This week, the baby is about the size of an avocado and I'm not really showing much yet but I know I will be very soon. I keep asking Shaun to take belly pics and then pulling my shirt as tight as it will go to show off the tiny bump that I do have. All in good time, my friends! Here's one just after our 12 week ultrasound.

I feel great. Mostly. Let's just say that I definitely understand the meaning of the pregnancy fatigue. I get it now! It's the kind of tiredness that makes you not even want dinner or dessert if it means getting in the way of you and your bed. It's the kind that if you have 8:00 dinner reservations with friends on a Friday evening (a total norm in your previous life), a two hour nap directly in advance of said reservation will be completely necessary, and even then, expect to be yawning the entire time. It's a crazy, overwhelming feeling but I consider myself to be incredibly lucky that I did not really get 'morning sickness'. I went through boughts of sour stomach and a general repulsion toward all foods, but no vomiting or any debilitating illness.

Baby Pink or Blue? Well, we don't know yet! I always thought that I'd want the big gender surprise when the baby was born (and it's something Shaun and I disagreed on for a long time before we were even trying to have a baby!), but once I found out that a baby was on the way, well...I just don't think I can wait that long to find out! I'm way too excited :) Not to mention that there are too many boy and girl bedding, clothing, etc out there to end up with all yellow ducks. We can't find out just yet, but at our next appointment hopefully! Meanwhile, I have no problem buying a few things for Baby's room, like this unbelievably sweet baby giraffe print from Trafalger Square's Etsy Shop! It makes my heart want to burst with joy. Thanks to Joanna for the tip on these prints!

Nut Butter Hater. It's true. There are very few foods that are on the gag list these days and said nut butter is one of them. This coming from the girl who used to carry a jar of pb in her purse...you know, for emergencies! Even before I found out I was pregnant, I was having my daily snack of cut up apple and Sunbutter and the Sunbutter just tasted...not good. Gag-worthy, in fact. I thought maybe it had gone bad. But the truth is, all nut butters have been repulsive to me. Nuts ok. Nut butter...not.

So there you have it. Five things happening with me and H lately :) Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Questions of the Day:

Would you want to find out the gender of your baby in advance?

If you have been pregnant, what were your gag foods?

What are your weekend plans?

love :) so happy for you :) eeeee!

Again, congrats! Both my sisters (who I'm really close too, one is my twin) have been pregnant and it's been such a cool thing to watch them go through (the good and the bad). I know for a fact that I would want to know what sex the baby was, but that's just me. My twin sister also had to know, so they found out, and my big sister found out with the first one, but they waited with the second. I think that it was great either way, just a different experience.

Since I haven't been prego ever I can't answer the gag food question for myself, but my twin sister (she's one of the 3 "Crusaders") couldn't eat sweets. At all. That meant cupcakes too. Luckily it was before we started the blog, but when we were out and she didn't want a cupcake or dessert everyone would ask what was wrong with her. That combined with the no-drinking thing I'm sure had people questioning. ;)

This weekend I am actually baby sitting one of my precious nieces who just turned a year old, and going on a scavenger hunt with my church. Should be fun. :)

I hope you have a fabulous weekend too!

Congrats! My youngest is 9 months old and we found out with him, but our first we chose to be surprised. I really enjoyed both scenarios. The surprise was wonderful, exciting, and helped us stick to some neutral baby stuff so that we could use it for our 2nd baby. I think finding out with our son made it a little more real for me and my mom was so excited to get her clothing shopping started.

Both my pregnancies I was super sick, but milk and broccoli were especially horrendous during those times.

I'm glad your back!

Congrats on baby news! Such an exciting time for you. You have permission to speak all about baby on your blog. It is so much fun.

Strawberries were my yuck food. So weird I know.

We found a gender only because I could not wait!

I can't tell you how excited I am for you both!!! Having a baby was the most wonderful thing of my life. Yest it's life changing, and yes, your blog will most likely change with you, and that's just fine. I'm eager to see some baby pics! And I"m loving that ultrasound shot. Isn't it just amazing that this baby inside you, small as it is, is so perfect? The ultrasounds made it so real for me... I remember going to that first one and just lying there sobbing as it all became so wonderfully real. I think that was the moment I felt like a mom. And then they told me they were SURE it was a boy! And now my boy is 16 years old and 6 feet tall. Ugh! You've got me all emotional!
Yes...! I wanted to know with each one what it was and I felt closer to the baby knowing a little more about who he or she was.
Gag foods? Not too many... but I did live on grilled cheese sandwiches for my first one. Not so good on the weight watching! But it all came off within months after the baby.
Enjoy!!

I had my kidlets 28 and 30 years ago. However, I still remember my gag foods. Bacon was one. The other, was smelling the coffee at work. Keep in mind before preggers, I was a coffeeaholic. Go figure. There were five of us pregnant at the same time at the office (large office space) and most of us had the coffee syndrome. The men in the office knew to make a quick side step as we made tracks to the restroom when we smelled the coffee.

Would I want to know the the gender. Still to this day, my answer would be no.. although i can see where it makes it nice and easy to plan for a special room or equipment etc.., there was the thrill of going through delivery and hearing the words....It's a BOY!! or it's a GIRL!! You had to peel us off the ceiling with our happiness. and that would have been no matter the gender outcome..whether one of each or having the same gender twice. It's a moment you remember just before you get to hold your little miracle.

Congratulations! Parenthood is something we would do over and over again.(providing we could stay young) It's a Blessing. One thing I will tell you..take plenty of pictures (you will withyour first) of ALL your kidlets. And take seperate pics sometimes..not always all together<G>. A little lesson learned as we look back.

I wish you all the best.
