Hi, I'm Rachel.

A few years ago I could barely boil water.

True story.

Determined to be a kick ass wife, I developed a love for football and learned to cook in my tiny Jersey City kitchen. I spend my days working in Manhattan, my nights and weekends chasing after a rambunctious toddler, and the hours in between cooking with my husband and feeding my TV habit...oh, and I blog about it all!

Welcome to my world!

My New Toy

Last night I finally got myself to the eye doctor after way overusing my last pair of contacts. Unfortunately it took 2 hours (!!!!) which is by far the longest I've ever spent at an eye doctor. It wasn't a fun way to end a Monday. You know what is, though? Coming home to this dinner waiting for me:

Shaun made a vegetable pasta sauce over whole wheat orrechiette with some shaved parmesean. Um, yes please!

The sauce was super thick and akin to a bolognese sauce, just without the meat. In the mix were onions, crushed tomatoes, bell peppers and chopped spinach. Bellissimo.

So I need to tell you about a little surprise that I got on Friday evening. We decided to order in and spend the night hanging on the couch since a certain someone is still in recovery. Shaun also surprised me with an early Valentine's Day gift...

A shiny, brand new Kindle! My jaw dropped in surprise. I actually do already have a Kindle but it is a first generation and not nearly as small or snazzy as the newer versions. In fact, as I squealed with surprise and excitement, Shaun explained that it was time I stopped carrying around that 'stone tablet' and get with the times. While I had no problems with the old version, this new one is about a third of the size! I am a huge reader, so for me, the Kindle is just about the best thing ever. It's so easy to tote around (and will be even easier now!), the screen is perfect for my eyes (no harsh lighted screen like the computer I stare at all day), and I can refuel with a new book on a moment's notice. It's really reading perfection.

Since I was in the final chapters of The Hunger Games (anyone reading?), I was easily able to transfer it right over to the new Kindle and carry on my way. I plowed through the end on Saturday and immediately downloaded Catching Fire, which is what I'm plowing through right now. I am loving this series! So what I want to know is, what are you reading right now? I am on the hunt for recommendations. Here's the list of books that I've recently gone through:

The Help

The Millenium Series (Girl with Dragon Tattoo)

Naked Heat

The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the World's Fair

World Without End (the sequel to Pillars of the Earth, one of my favorite books EVER)

Never Let Me Go

The Hunger Games

There are many more, but this is the list of what I've gone through over the last couple of months. Any suggestions?

And bonus question: Are you on the e-reading train?

My mom loves her kindle!!! I haven't jumped on that bandwagon yet! That sauce looks so good-recipe!!!

I love the Kindle. You can read it in the sun and doesn't hurt your eyes like the colored screens. I have the Help on my kindle but am trudging through the Millennium series now. Can't wait for the snow to go so I can do more traveling. ( my time to read).
The recipe looks great. Next week we are starting a week of no meat so this looks yummy.

Love my stone tablet and am loving the Hunger Games - I am on Mockingjay - not as good as the first two yet, but I can't wait to find out what happens!!

I'm not the the train yet. I still have a bunch of books on my night stand including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that I need to finish. I heard the Hunger Games was REALLY good! Did you like that? As for recommendations, I hear the Red Tent is an amazing book!

Jenn, I have also read Water for Elephants and loved it! Can't wait for the movie.

Erin, I'll get Shaun's recipe and post it later this week!

Joanna, The Hunger Games was AWESOME! I found myself wanting to sneak away from work so I could squeeze in a few pages :) Now that to me, is a great book!

All my books are massage therapy related at the moment, lol! And I'm not on the e-reader bandwagon quite yet. I love the feel of turning pages!

I am going to save your list! Right now I am reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it is good so far.

I am so totally jealous! I LOVE the Kathy Reichs series (I read them all this summer) - that is the books that the Bones television show is based on. Enjoy!

I'd love to hop on the e-reading train, but I just can't convince myself I won't want books again! Since I do most of my reading outside at the pool or at the beach, I feel like my Kindle would get destroyed in a beach bag amongst the sand and water. What are your thoughts on this?

February 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlyssa @ Life of bLyss

Alyssa, I totally hear you! I will tell you that I read mine on the beach in Aruba every year and by the pool all summer and haven't had a problem. The key is keeping it in a case and covered when not in use. I cart mine everyday in my purse too and never had a problem as long as the case is on it.

I also didn't know how to feel about giving up actual books when I got my first one, but once I started using it I never looked back!

I love everything I have read by jodi picoult. Velocuty by dean koontz is an excellent thriller/suspense novel.

I wish I was on the e reading train :( But alas, not yet!

I've heard The Help was really good, but I haven't read it yet. Recent favorite, What the Dog Saw, by Malcolm Gladwell... if you're a non fiction nerd like me ;)

I just got one for Christmas! They are amazing and a great solution for a book-cutter problem. :)

AND I just read about the mandolin injury. Ouch! I did the same thing making sweet potato chips (thankfully not to that degree!) thinking the guard was just in the way. Hope he recovers quickly!

Thanks Laura! Luckily he's on the road to recovery! :)

I've heard wonderful things about the Kindle, but I love turning an actual page, and being able to see how far through I am.

A little over a year ago some friends and I started a book club, and it's so fun to read new things that I wouldn't normally pick up on my own! We recently read 'The Help', and right now we're on 'The Devil in the White City'. :) A couple others we've read (and that I would highly recommend) are 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak and 'Let the Great World Spin' by Colum McCann.

Your dinner looks awesome! Yum.
How exciting about getting a kindle...I'll be interested to hear how you like it over time. I don't have one, but I keep considering it!
I haven't had time to read anything for fun lately...just textbooks and wellness books...but I'm hoping to soon!

Stine, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Devil in the White City! I had mixed feelings about it.

Kudos to cooking husbands everywhere!!! A night off helps you to jump back in with new energy the next day! I don't have a Kindle...but I love new toys! Just finished reading Farewell My Subaru and before that Animal Vegetable Miracle. (Older books and kinda "granola" -- kinda like me, I guess...)

what a fun new present!!! i got one for xmas but sent it back because i'm too cheap to buy the books when i can just go to the library, lol :)

Rachel, I just am seeing this post for the first time! I am a HUGE reader and have read all the books you listed - we have similar taste! Pillars of the Earth is also one of my fav books of all time - what did you think of World Without End? Here are two books that I consider MUST reads (I wouldn't be surprised if you have read them already), but just in case: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

February 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkristin @ delishliving

Ken Follett's newest book, "Fall of Giants" is a gooder too. Different than the Pillars series for sure, but I really enjoyed it. Have you seen the mini-series on TV of Pillars? I thought it was awesome!!!

February 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkristin @ delishliving

Hey Kristin! I haven't seen the mini-series yet, and I'm not sure if I want to or not. I love the book so much, I don't want it to be tainted! I really enjoyed World Without End, though it's definitely not as good as Pillars (even though it's a pretty similar story!). Overall, I liked it! Also, I have read The Kite Runner - have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? By the same author and I liked a lot more!
